March 2018 – Brahms German Requiem

Brahms Requiem

Thank you, Gennadiy Tsybikov, for sharing your video our performance!

Many feel that Brahms’ Requiem for choir, orchestra, and soprano and baritone soloists, is his finest composition.

Following the deaths of his closest friend, composer Robert Schumann, and the death of his beloved mother, Brahms wanted to write a requiem in their memory. He wanted it to be a comfort for the living, rather than a ritual for the dead. He entitled it Ein deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem). He told a friend he should have called the work Ein menschliches Requiem (A Human Requiem), underscoring his desire to provide solace to those who grieve. He chose texts from the German Luther Bible and set them in German, his native language.

The Requiem features bass soloist, Gennadiy Tsybikov, and soprano soloists Megan Conroy and Alexis Balkowitsch. The music is beautiful, and we are looking forward to performing for you. Please plan to join us!

Jana Hart directing, accompanied by Laurie Chinn.
